In an effort to outsmart political opponents and come up trumps in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, senior leaders, MPs and MLAs of BJP have been meeting eminent personalities across the country, as part of the ‘Sampark for Samarthan’ (Contact for Support) initiative, to rope them into the party and widen their voter base. There is particular focus on Tamil Naduconsidering its weak base in the southern state.
Senior leaders of BJP said the party high command had devised a strategy to meet prominent persons across the country and explain to them about the Narendra Modigovernment’s achievements, besides attempting to bring them on board. “We plan to meet one lakh eminent personalities across the country as part of the campaign and explain to them the government’s achievements,” Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told reporters during an interaction in Chennai last week.
The minister had also tweeted about her meetings with ‘important persons’ like VIT chancellor G Viswanathan, cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin and several others along with photographs to popularise the campaign. “She (Nirmala Sitharaman) handed over a booklet on their achievements and sought my views on the government,” said a former politician, who had a brief session with minister Seetharaman. He, however, declined to disclose any more information regarding the meeting, adding that he had no interest in returning to politics. Every Union ministers and national level leader of BJP have been instructed to meet at least 25 prominent personalities, including educationalists, actors and retired IAS and IPS officers, in their respective states.
