(RAHNUMA) India has more than 50% of its population below the age of 25 and more than 65% below the age of 35. It is expected that, by the end of 2020, the average age of an Indian will be 29 years, compared to 37 for China and 48 for Japan.
Thanks to its growing young population and the emergence of a massive middle class, as well as a higher Internet connectivity from both urban and rural areas, India is set to emerge as the next global beauty giant after China.
Hyderabad’s beauty and makeup industry is merged in both tradition and self identity, and is a cultural catalyst in shaping attitudes in Hyderabad about beauty, personal style and identity.
The Rahnuma Daily sat with Hannah Hameed Raina, CEO of Hannah H.R, a beauty and makeover start up in Hyderabad and asked her about how she got involved in India’s quickly expanding beauty and makeup sector, and what advice she had for other aspiring entrepreneurs.
Tell us about your company Hannah H.R and how it started.
I was sitting on a bench in a park introspecting about life when out of nowhere, I got a text from someone I did not know asking me to do her makeup for her brothers wedding. Prior to this, I had done a lot of makeup for family and friends then it became for friends of friends. Eventually, the word spread and then I started to get makeup requests from stranger! That’s when I decided to get my self professionally trained and certified, and start off as a small business
You are from a well established family in Hyderabad, tell us why you felt the need to start your own business?
I always knew from the very beginning that a desk job wasn’t for me. I had always planned it in my head that one day i would establish my own business, and from very early on I knew I wanted to do makeup and I was freakishly good at it, even as a teenager. For me, it has never about the money but more about following my passion. I have an amazing family who have always been there and backed me up whenever needed. But yes, coming from a certain family with a certain upbringing, I have to make sure I don’t let anyone down.
You are the CEO of Hannah H.R, how does it feel to be your own boss?
Being your own boss is great! But it also means that you have a huge responsibility on your shoulders. You have to work round the clock you don’t get days off, and you can’t afford to be inconsistent and always have to be self motivated. If the boss doesn’t perform, the staff doesn’t perform. Also, there is no greater satisfaction than implementing your own ideas and thoughts into your own business and yielding positive results.
What specific services does Hannah H.R provide and to whom?
I specialize in bridal makeup, but we also do a lot of photo shoots, fashion shows, magazine shoots etc., so my clientele varies from brides, to models, fashion designers and you name it.
What makes coming to Hannah H.R a unique experience for your customers?
I feel coming and getting your makeup done should be a relaxing experience especially for brides, who already have so much going on. These few hours in between their hectic schedules should be their time to unwind a little, away from everyone. Apart from getting amazing makeup done, and looking their absolute best for any occasion my clients are very well taken care of. Most people who come to me somehow connect with me on a personal level. I love the fact that people feel comfortable enough to talk to me about anything under the sun
How many different services does Hannah H.R provide?
I do makeup and hairstyles, we do not provide any other salon services.
You seem to travel a lot, does Hannah H.R have international professional affiliations or primarily Indian professional associations?
I do not have international professional associations as yet, but certainly intend to do advanced makeup courses internationally and also get into SFX makeup, which i have always found extremely intriguing.
What is your most popular service at Hannah H.R?
It’s very crucial for a makeup artist to make sure they don’t overwhelm their clients with over the top makeup. At Hannah.H.R, we work intently on client specifications and strive at rendering an unforgettable experience.
Where do you see your company Hannah H.R in 5 years?
Well, I’m really excited with where I am right now but if you ask, in 5 years I would like to be seen as someone with deep expertise in the makeup industry where others can go to for help, ideas and techniques. I’ve had amazing mentors, so I’d like to be able to provide similar guidance in future.
How can prospect customers see your work and contact you for your services?
Lastly, thank you for your time. What advice can you give other aspiring young entrepreneurs who might be too scared to believe in themselves, and to follow their passion in life?
It takes planning and perseverance to be successful. Believe in yourself and in your idea, take the risk, learn from your mistakes and most importantly be consistent and in the end i promise it will all be worth it.
