Lebanon waits for UN probe into alleged Hezbollah tunnels: President

BEIRUT (Rahnuma): Lebanese President Michel Aoun said Thursday that Lebanon is waiting for the UN investigation into Israel’s claims about the existence of tunnels dug by Hezbollah into northern Israel.

“We are waiting for the UNIFIL’s reports to check if these tunnels have crossed the Blue Line,” Aoun said, referring to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon.

His remarks came during his meeting with Acting UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Pernille Dahler Kardel at Baabda Palace to discuss the latest developments on the Lebanon-Israel borders, the Lebanese Presidency said in its webiste.

Aoun said that Lebanon is following up closely on the tunnels to prevent Israel from taking advantage of this issue to jeopardize stability in southern Lebanon.

He reiterated Lebanon’s commitment to the UN Security Council Resolution 1701, though Israel is committing 150 violations monthly of Lebanon’s sovereignty.

Israel violated Lebanon’s airspace on Thursday by launching a hot air balloon with a spying device attached to it over the southern border town of Abbassieh, while installing a large surveillance camera along the road linking Fatima Gate to the al-Khiam plain, the National News Agency reported.
