November 26, 2020 (RAHNUMA) The Canadian Association of Professional Immigration Consultants (CAPIC) applauds today’s announcement from the Honourable Marco E.L. Mendicino, P.C., M.P., Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, that the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants Act is now in force.

Minister Mendicino noted that this “announcement reaffirms that our Government is committed to the implementation of a new professional governance regime. We’re taking decisive action to hold immigration and citizenship consultants to account by improving oversight and increasing accountability to protect both the public and consultants in good standing from dishonest consultants who are taking advantage of vulnerable people.”

The College Act establishes a regulatory framework for immigration and citizenship consultants and ensures the imminent College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants will act as the official, national regulator for the profession.

Dory Jade, CEO, CAPIC: “It is a momentous day for all Canadians to have the College Act come into force. The College Act will improve the services rendered by immigration consultants, who are now as accountable as other professionals, such as doctors and lawyers.”

The new College is expected in 2021 with a mandate to protect both the public, and immigration and citizenship consultants in good standing, from those operating in bad faith. The College will be authorized to investigate professional misconduct and make disciplinary decisions.
