(RAHNUMA) Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has consistently defined the Palestinian people as Canaanites and that demonstrates why it is not only a horrendous crime against humanity and history to attempt to uproot them in the name of religion, but also how his elevated self-image exemplifies the best role model worthy of emulation for Palestine and Palestinians.
The truth embedded in President Abbas’s narrative demonstrates why he cannot be ignored by his friends and rivals, to this very date, as China’s recent comments show, and why, like Imam Husayn, he has already won in the eyes of history, even if it is not apparent to everyone just yet.
The Al-Mawsu’at Al-Filastinniya (Palestinian encyclopedia) states, “The Palestinians are the descendants of the Jebusites, who are of Arab origin”, and describes Jerusalem as an “Arab city because its first builders were the Canaanite Jebusites, whose descendants are the Palestinians.“
The American Committee for Jerusalem in 2001 declared, “According to a number of historians and scholars, many of the Arabs of Jerusalem today, indeed the majority of Palestinian Arabs, are descendants of the ancient Jebusites and Canaanites.”
Jericho was the first city of the Canaanites to be conquered and subsequently liberated by the Israelites immediately after the Exodus. Joshua 6:1-27 gives the Biblical account of the conquest of the land of Canaan by the Israelites under the command of Joshua.
According to Judges 3:5-6, “The children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hittites, and Jebusites: and they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons…”
During his address at the UN Security Council in which he called on the international community to hold a Middle East peace conference, with the goal of launching multilateral negotiations, President Abbas reminded the international community the Arab residents of Judea, Samaria, and Gaza were in fact descended from the ancient Canaanites, hence its indigenous population stating the following,
“We are the descendants of the Canaanites who lived in the land of Palestine 5,000 years ago, and continuously remained there to this day. Our great people remain rooted in its land. The Palestinian people built their own cities and homeland, and made contributions to humanity and civilization.”
The Canaanites, known in Arabic as Bani Kin’anah were divided into four branches: An-Nadr, Abdumanat, Malakan, and Malak.
Al Tabari wrote, “… the descendants of al-Nadr ibn Kin’ana were called Quraysh.”
Countries are for nations. The Palestinians are the nation of Canaan, and hence they will have their country, and the world must recognize it as a pre-existimg historical fact that simply needs to be acknowledged again.
This is because the truth always prevails, just as the world saw in 1948 with the re-establishment of a Jewish home in the territory kings David and Solomon shared and developed with the Canaanites and Qedarites.
Words make worlds.
The first step that is needed is for the Canaanites of Palestine to begin outlawing of Antisemitism, banning misinterpreted religious hate speech, banning Holocaust denial, and incorporating gratitude, shukr, back into their communities, for their culture and its rich historical importance to Arabs and Muslims even after the advent of Islam.
For the Israelis, the first step I would suggest is to reform political Zionism from its religio-political ideological fallacies such as of those defined by the ‘Father of Zionism’ Isaac La Peyrère in his pre-Adamism theory.
Israelis must reject the fallacy that Palestinians are sub-human pre-Adamite savages. They are in fact not, and the Canaanite civilization enabled the Israelites in the past to attain glory, and make a mark in history.
La Peyrère’s ideological position on pre-Adamism as espoused by him in his book Men Before Adam worked with Europeans and justified the colonial era for them, because they were unlearned in religion. However, Israelis should see La Peyrère’s theory as inconsistent with the classical interpretations by their great scholars of the past as found in the Midrash and in the Torah itself which in fact praised Lady Hajrah as God’s reward to Abraham, and Ishmael as also blessed by God Himself.
According to Carleton Coon, the “homeland and cradle” of the Mediterranean race was in North Africa and Southwest Asia, in the area from Morocco to Afghanistan. He further stated that Mediterraneans formed the major population element in modern-day Pakistan and North India.
Coon further stated, “…from Morocco to Afghanistan, is the homeland and cradle of the Mediterranean race. Mediterraneans are found also in Spain, Portugal, most of Italy, Greece and the Mediterranean islands, and in all these places, as in Southwest Asia, they form the major genetic element in the local populations.
In a dark-skinned and finer-boned form they are also found as the major population element in Pakistan and northern India … The Mediterranean race, then, is indigenous to, and the principal element in, the Southwest Asia, and the greatest concentration of a highly evolved Mediterranean type falls among two of the most ancient Semitic-speaking peoples, notably the Arabs and the Jews (Although it may please neither party, this is the truth.). The Mediterraneans occupy the center of the stage; their areas of greatest concentration are precisely those where civilization is the oldest. This is to be expected, since it was they who produced it and it, in a sense, that produced them.”
A change in narratives between the Israelis and Canaanite Palestinian Arabs will result in a change in their attitudes towards one another, after that it’s smooth sailing for these Mediterraneans all over again, inshallah (God willing).
