Ronaldo backs decision to play Libertadores decider in Spain

MEXICO CITY (Rahnuma)  Brazil great Ronaldo said Wednesday that he supported a decision to play the second leg of the Copa Libertadores final between River Plate and Boca Juniors in Madrid.

The match will be played at Real Madrid’s Bernabeu stadium on Sunday, two weeks after it was suspended due to an attack on Boca’s team bus by River Plate fans.

“It’s been an emergency. What happened in Argentina was very ugly. It’s not a soccer problem, it’s a social problem,” the 1994 and 2002 World Cup winner told journalists during a promotional event here.

“I think that playing the final at the Bernabeu is a very good solution from a sporting perspective and a logistics one – for the teams and fans.”

Ronaldo said there is no favorite to win the Copa Libertadores, South America’s premier club competition.

The fixture between Argentina’s biggest rivals was suspended on Nov. 24 after Boca’s bus was pelted with stones and bottles as it approached River’s Monumental stadium in the northern districts of Buenos Aires.

Several Boca players were injured by broken glass while others – including former Argentina international forward Carlos Tevez – were affected by tear gas fired by police to disperse fans.

The match was rescheduled for the next day but was postponed again just hours before kickoff. The first leg at La Bombonera ended in a 2-2 draw
