Security to be restored to Mount Lebanon after Aley’s clashes: president

BEIRUT (Rahnuma): Lebanese President Michel Aoun announced on Monday that security in Mount Lebanon’s Aley district will be restored after the tensions a day earlier, according to Presidency.

“We have taken the decision to restore security in Aley and arrest all those who were involved in the shooting incidents on Sunday,” Aoun announced following an emergency meeting for the Higher Defense Council.

Aoun also called upon security agencies to continue their investigations into Aley’s clashes in a bid to identify suspects killing two bodyguards who were accompanying Minister of State for the Displaced Saleh Gharib.

Lebanese Druze Minister Saleh Gharib, who is also member of the pro-Syrian Lebanese Democratic Party headed by Talal Arslan, was attacked on Sunday evening by gunmen who opened fire at his convoy while he was heading to the mountain village of Qabr Shamoun.

Two of his guards were killed.

Gharib said his convoy was attacked by supporters of a rival Druze faction headed by Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) leader Walid Jumblatt.

Tensions erupted on Sunday in Aley when the Free Patriotic Movement Leader Gebran Bassil, who is an ally of Arslan, planned to visit the area, prompting PSP supporters to block the roads.

PSP leader Walid Jumblatt is a long-time critic of Bassil’s role in the government.
