Syrian air defenses destroy 70 pct of launched Israeli missiles on Syrian military sites: report

DAMASCUS, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) — The Syrian air defenses destroyed 70 percent of the Israeli missiles that were launched against Syrian military positions on Saturday, pan-Arab al-Mayadeen TV reported, citing Syrian military sources.

The Israelis fired tens of missiles on Syrian military positions, following the downing of an Israeli F-16 warplane by Syrian air defenses, said the report, adding that 70 percent of the missiles were destroyed before reaching their targets.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli warplanes launched airstrikes on the T4 military airbase in Syria’s central province of Homs, targeting the drones’ station in that facility in response to what the Israeli claimed was an infiltration of an Iranian drone into Israel.

Later, Israel launched another strike on military sites in the countryside of the capital Damascus.

The attacks triggered the air defenses in Syria, which destroyed the F-16, the first time an Israeli warplane is destroyed by Syrian air defenses in decades.

The Syrian army has yet to release a military statement to explain the situation.
