Washington, Nov 4 (IANS) US President Donald Trump has announced his support for Kentucky’s Republican Governor Matt Bevin ahead of the state’s gubernatorial election.

In a tweet on Sunday, Trump encouraged Kentucky residents to vote for Bevin, which he called a “great governor”, Xinhua news agency reported.

The President also said that he wanted the vote to “send a strong signal” to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, likely pointing to a Democratic-led impeachment inquiry into him.

According to the White House, Trump will hold a “Keep America Great” rally at Rupp Arena in Kentucky’s Lexington on Monday evening, on the eve of Tuesday’s gubernatorial election.

Bevin, first elected as Governor of Kentucky in 2015, faces Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear, a Democrat, in this year’s race.

A poll conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy last month found Bevin and Beshear tied, each with 46 per cent support from Kentucky voters.

Trump won Kentucky by some 30 percentage points in the 2016 presidential election.

Besides Kentucky, Mississippi also will hold a gubernatorial election on Tuesday.

Trump held a rally in Mississippi on November 1 to advocate for Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi Tate Reeves’ campaign.
