WASHINGTON (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday met with reality TV star Kim Kardashian at the White House to discuss prison reform, attracting a lot of attention from U.S. media.
Kardashian tweeted that the meeting was for Alice Johnson, a 63-year-old woman who was sentenced to life in prison in 1996 on cocaine possession and money-laundering charges.
“I would like to thank President Trump for his time this afternoon. It is our hope that the President will grant clemency to Ms. Alice Marie Johnson, who is serving a life sentence for a first-time, non-violent drug offense,” the celebrity told her 60 million Twitter followers.
“We are optimistic about Ms. Johnson’s future and hopeful that she — and so many like her — will get a second chance at life,” the reality TV star said in another tweet.
Trump also posted on Twitter about the “great meeting,” saying that they had discussed prison reform and sentencing.
Trump’s Twitter post includes a photo, showing him sitting behind his desk, smiling, while Kardashian, in a black dress, stands beside him.
Last week, Trump granted a rare posthumous pardon to boxing legend Jack Johnson, saying that the black boxer had served in prison due to “racially-motivated injustice.” Trump said in a tweet that actor Sylvester Stallone had brought the case to his attention in a phone call.
Earlier this month, Trump had pushed for prison reform at a White House summit and urged Congress to give him a bill to sign.
