LUSAKA (Rahnuma): Zambia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Joseph Malanji said on Tuesday that the Constitutional Court’s ruling on President Edgar Lungu’s eligibility to contest the 2021 elections has brought certainty to the international community about the country.
The minister told reporters during a press briefing that Zambia’s defense and security was at stake before the landmark judgment, adding that the ruling has removed the uncertainty that was casting a shadow over the country.
Zambia must ensure that it upholds its democracy and peace so that it continues to be a role model in the southern African region, he said.
The Constitutional Court of the country on Friday declared that President Lungu is eligible to contest the 2021 presidential election.
Lungu was first elected president in 2015 following the death of former President Michael Sata who did not finish his term, and was re-elected as president in 2016.
